The Vessel – Gaiwan

Brewing sensual aromas of green, white, and oolong tea, the Ming Dynasty Gaiwan is delicate yet functional in its structure and design. The vessel’s fine porcelain absorbs heat to minimise leaf damage while the concave lid acts as a small cup. To be drunk directly from the instrument or poured into another container, the Gaiwan is elegant, unchanged, and considered the official Imperial ceremony tea decanter.

Rich in their heritage and intricate, intentional form, MAHŌ Sensory Candles--a match in purposeful, modern artistry--have re-envisioned the Gaiwan in collaboration with Melbourne-based artists to honour the simplicity of fragrance meets design.

Reflective of the ancient practice of savouring steeped tea leaves from the concave Gaiwan lid, please enjoy the fragrance of each MAHŌ Sensory Candle before igniting the aromas. Each vessel has been designed to be repurposed as a collectible statement piece or part of a modern teaware collection once burning is complete.

The Artist -  Nani Puspasari

Designed by Melbourne-based artist Nani Puspasari, Evergreen captures the soft feel of a cool Summer morning inside the home. Drifting in and out of the garden rows, breathing in magnolia and fresh-cut roses, Evergreen captures the slow, lazy pace of an early quiet morning. Wafting through the air with delicate florals and earthy garden, MAHŌ captures the stillness of seasonal magic that slows place and time.

Raised on a small island surrounded by gardens in full bloom, Indonesian-Australian artist Nani Puspasari is a visual designer, illustrator, painter, and ceramicist based in Melbourne. Inspired by memories, images, and the everyday around her, Nani builds narratives by colouring real-life artefacts with a personal perspective to create bold but minimal designs. Relying on colourful, pop art paintings and quirky, dreamlike images, Nani uses every piece as an opportunity to explore and expand her artistic mediums without being limited to a single style.
